How to get Rid Of Them

The good news is that if you practice good horticultural practices which include watering and fertilizing, it can greatly reduce the damage that Japanese beetles cause to plants. Here are some things you can do to get rid of them.

# Hand pick them, by knocking them into a can of soapy water. It does take some time to do it this way, but it’s very effective in getting rid of them. When you pick them up, put them in a mixture of 1 tablespoon of liquid dishsoap and water. This will cause them to drown.

# Neem oil—you can deter adult beetles from feeding on plants by spraying them with neem oil. Neem oil contains potassium bicarbonate and is kind of effective, especially when sprayed on roses. The adult beetles will actually ingest the neem oil and die.

# Row covers—You can protect your plants from Japanese beetles by using row covers during the feeding season.

# Dropcloth—You can put a dropcloth down on your plants, especially in the early morning when the Japanese beetles are most active, and then you can simply shake them off of the dropcloth into a bucket full of soapy water.

# Insecticides—If you want to be able to get rid of the Japanese beetles the easiest way to do so is to implement insecticides. You can spray it on your plants and the beetles will die pretty rapidly.

# Japanese beetle traps—If you need to control a large number of beetles you can use yellow target traps that have bait that has pheromone attractant on it, but there are times when the beetles aren’t necessarily attracted to the traps. However, you shouldn’t put the trap near your garden or you will be attracting beetles from all over the place to your plants. If you decide to use this kind of trap make sure you place them far away from your target plants. The beetles will flock to the traps and will be caught.

# Fruit Cocktail trap—You can easily purchase Japanese beetle traps of all kinds, but the most effective trap of all is the fruit cocktail. You simply just open up the can and let it sit out in the sun for about a week to ferment. Then you place the can on top of some bricks or something flat inside a light-colored bucket. Then you fill the bucket with water.
