Cathedral Cove Tour: My Experience

If you’re planning to visit, here’s a guide to make the most of your trip to this stunning location.

Cathedral Cove has become my favourite spot in the Coromandel, and one of my favourite places in all of New Zealand. I’ll never forget my first time seeing that iconic archway. If you’re planning to visit, here’s a guide to make the most of your cathedral cove tour to this stunning location.

The Walk to the Cove
The main walk to Cathedral Cove takes about 30-40 minutes from the car park. The path is well-maintained, but it can be a bit of a workout with some uphill climbs. The scenery along the way is fantastic, though – you’ll get ocean views and a few smaller coves to check out. Tip: Pack light, and bring water. There’s no shade along the way, so a hat and sunscreen are essential.

Exploring the Beach and Archway
Once you arrive, you’ll understand why Cathedral Cove is so famous. The massive natural archway and pristine beach are genuinely breathtaking. If you’re up for it, bring a picnic and plan to spend a few hours here. I’ve had some great afternoons just lounging around and soaking up the views. Advice: Early mornings or late afternoons are best to avoid crowds.

Snorkelling and Swimming
The water here is usually calm, perfect for a swim or a snorkel. You’ll find clear water with some rock formations where fish like to hide. I recommend bringing snorkelling gear if you can; it’s worth it.

Other Activities Nearby
There are other nearby spots like Gemstone Bay and Stingray Bay, which are just a short walk away. They’re often quieter than Cathedral Cove itself and just as beautiful. After a morning at the Cove, I like to hop over to one of these spots for a bit more seclusion.

Cathedral Cove lives up to the hype – it’s a spot that feels like it’s straight out of a dream. Whether you’re there for the photos, the views, or just a relaxing day on the sand, you’ll come away feeling a bit more in awe of New Zealand’s natural beauty.
