Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the traditional sextet style and an even more consistent and powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Bobby Kimball's growing virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloying than earlier efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded their Amsterdam live show which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released their new studio album a few months after, and went on a world tour to support the album. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album titled Then & Now. It was the first album by the band not to include any single song that had the word "A" in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that restricted his singing capabilities.
