Living in New Zealand means having some of the best holiday spots right on your doorstep, and the Bay of Islands is at the top of my list for weekend trips. It’s one of those places where you want your accommodation to be comfortable and close to everything, but not necessarily over-the-top expensive. After spending a fair bit of time in the area, I’ve discovered a few key tips that can help anyone choose the perfect place to stay without breaking the bank.
1. Define What You Want from Your Stay
Before even looking at where to stay, take a minute to think about what kind of experience you want from your trip. Are you all about luxury and pampering, or is your goal to save money and get out there exploring? I’ve done both, and the key to picking the right bay of islands accommodation is defining your priorities.
For me, I’m all about balance. I want a place that’s affordable but still feels like a treat, with a good location so I can easily explore. Once you’ve figured out your ideal experience, it’s much easier to start narrowing down your options.
2. Don’t Overlook the Importance of Location
When I first stayed in the Bay of Islands, I didn’t pay much attention to where I was booking. As long as it had a bed and a shower, I was happy. But after a few trips, I learned the importance of location.
I’ve stayed in places far from the main hubs like Paihia, and while the views were great, I spent a lot of time driving. If you’re only there for a weekend, try to stay within walking distance of the main attractions – whether it’s a beautiful beach, a nearby café, or a marina. It makes the whole trip feel much more relaxed and enjoyable.
3. Ask Locals for Recommendations
One thing I’ve found really helpful is asking locals for accommodation recommendations. Whether it’s a friend, a colleague, or someone you meet at a café, locals often know hidden gems that might not appear in guidebooks or on booking sites.
A couple of times, I’ve ended up staying in smaller, family-run motels that were much more affordable than the larger, more commercial properties. Not only was I saving money, but I got a more authentic Bay of Islands experience.
4. Think About Convenience for Activities
When choosing where to stay, think about how easy it will be to access the activities you’re interested in. I’ve had a few occasions where I booked a place that was too far away from things like boat tours, hiking trails, or even restaurants.
If you’re coming for a specific activity, like a Cathedral Cove cruise or a boat tour, check if the accommodation offers pick-up services or is close to the departure point. This can save you a lot of time and hassle.
5. Book Early to Avoid Disappointment
I can’t stress this one enough – especially during peak times like the holidays or long weekends. When I first moved to New Zealand, I tried to book a last-minute weekend away in the Bay, only to find that everywhere was booked out. Now, I always make sure to book well in advance, especially if I want a specific place or time.
